Do We Need a Car? Where Do We Park? We Have a Tesla. Where Can We Charge It?

Do you need a car?

Most likely, no. Savannah’s entire historic district is 2 square miles, and the vast majority of visitors get around by walking. It’s one of the reasons we moved here — we can walk everywhere!

The only reason you’d need a car is if you plan to visit Tybee Island or Hilton Head Island during your stay. Tybee is about a 25-30 minute drive, while Hilton Head is about an hour away.

There are pedicabs, too, as well as hop-on-hop-off tour buses (a stop is located on our block!), for those who can’t walk very far. For $10/per adult (prices current as of September/’24), you can reserve a PediCab to take you wherever you need to go within the historic district.

But where do we park and what does it cost?

Parking options vary considerably in Savannah’s historic district. Let’s first go over what your options are when staying with Be Our Gaston.

PARKING NEAR BE OUR GASTON ON THE WEEKEND

If you drive to Savannah for the weekend, and many of our guests do, you can use street parking for free. The best locations are on a) East Gaston or b) Abercorn where it intersects with Gaston. From 5:00 PM Friday until 8:00 AM Monday, parking is free in this area.

PARKING NEAR BE OUR GASTON ON THE WEEKDAYS

OPTION #1: Park for free

If you drive your car south of East Gaston and find a spot on Lincoln, East Huntingdon, East Hall, etc, you can park for free anytime. Please, please, please be mindful, however, of the street sweeping signs. If your car is parked on the street during the window of the street cleaners, you will get ticketed. Fortunately, each street has a different day and/or time, so you can literally move your car around the corner or to another street…remembering, of course, to stay south of Gaston. Personally, I would avoid parking on Abercorn because it is busy, while the residential streets are a lot quieter. If you see a 2 Hour Parking sign, you will get ticketed once the two hours have expired.

OPTION #2 Pay to park

The first option is to download the ParkSavannah app via the App Store or Google Play and pay for parking via your phone. Alternatively, you can find a kiosk on the street and pay with your credit card. There is a kiosk on Abercorn just south of Gaston St. on the east side. Look up and locate the giant phone tower. It is right near that!

FOR TESLA OWNERS

We have a Tesla charger in our garage and you may use it during your stay. We keep our Tesla in there, but we will move it for a couple of hours to allow you to charge. We do need advance notice, however, of when you will be charging and we ask that you move the vehicle once it’s full.

PARKING CLOSER TO THE RIVER

The closer you get to River Street, the more expensive — and ridiculously difficult — parking is. There are garages there, too, but I’ve known people to wait for 15 - 30 minutes just to enter the garage, only to find out there are no spaces available (seriously.) I walk/run down by the river every single day, but I realize that some people have bad knees, hips, etc. If that’s the case, I would consider a pedicab or Uber.

PARKING GARAGES NEAR BE OUR GASTON

Savannah has several garages in the downtown area, but they are all a walk away from us….probably about a .5 mile walk. If you’d prefer to park in a garage, the two closest options are: The Liberty Street Parking Deck (.5 miles away) and the The Liberty Street Parking Garage (.7 miles away).
